FEATURED POET FOR FALL 1998

                       LYN LIFSHIN

SARAJEVO

after the blast
one man walked
thru limb-less
torsos in the
market place

five hours
reaching for
his wife, waited
at the morgue,
the hospital,

walked thru an
aisle of fingers
looking for
the ring he
gave her

THIS IS A CHAIN LETTER: YOU OWE IT TO YOURSELF TO SELF REALIZE

it's a 12 step chain but
you have to do it in
the mail before 22
hours are over.
if you don't, killer
cells will eat your
pronouns. One
woman threw her
invitation away and
moths abducted
all her notebooks.
This is no joke. This
isn't a made up story.
Connect with others
addicted to being
apart. Loneliness is
a killer. This letter
links you, makes
publication possible,
gives you more
than 20 extra years
and four acceptances
a week. One man who
didn't follow thru lost
his desk in a fire.
When he went to the
garbage dump, sifted
thru torn bottles and
rusty wires until he
found his egg smeared
letter crawling with
lice and scraped off
the mold, sent the
letter on to 74 others,
was, by the end of the
week, called by Warner
Brothers to come out
and direct his script,
star in the Chain of
Life, a self help guide to
self realization, JEWELS IN
THE GARBAGE DUMP

More of Lyn's work can be found in PESHEKEE RIVER POETRY.
